GAMEPLAY
There are two teams, Survivors and Gamma Prime as playable characters with unique skills – depending on which of the five classes per faction the player chooses. One faction usually acts as attacking force while the other one tries to defend itself by placing traps, barricading entrances and much more. The more players work together on accomplishing a certain task, the faster and/or stronger the end result (barricade/trap) will be. The same goes for tearing these things down: Work together and you’ll get it done much, much easier. As in incentive for players to play as a zombie there are a number of perks that come with that, being able to control a horde of AI-zombies only being one of them. The matches will take about 15-20 minutes to play out on a variety of unique scenarios, each with its own challenges and flavor.
BARRICADES and TRAPS
Barricades are a piece of equipment used by the Survivors in Cold Comfort. The Survivors have an unlimited number of barricades able to be placed on windows or doors to prevent the Gamma Prime from having a line of sight, and slowing down their progression. Barricades can be easily identified as they are wooden boards.
Normal barricades can easily be destroyed (by both teams) with a special attack or with three melee hits.
Since they break the Gamma Prime’s line of sight, it is recommended to, if possible, place them all around the objective, which will also slow them down and reveal their location upon hearing a barricade being destroyed. It is also viable to place them around popular breach points that will ultimately allow the Gamma Prime easier access to the objective if not done otherwise. Doing this away from the objective may also confuse Gamma Prime controlling rats during the preparation phase as to the objectives true location if it is not already known. It is advised to not place barricades between Survivors or objectives in adjacent rooms as it will slow Survivor movement in the area and make it harder to provide support to teammates.
Knox features the unique ability to place three reinforced barricades which are extremely resistant and take between 12-20 melee hits to destroy.
In addition to the barricades, Cold Comfort features a variety of traps, both for the Survivors as well as the Gamma Prime.
DESTRUCTABILITY
Destruction is a big part of gameplay in Cold Comfort. Use this to your advantage to create alternative paths and improved lines of sight.
All surfaces in the game (walls, trapdoors, floors, and barricades) come in three different types. Breachable, semi-breachable, and unbreachable. Walls can exist in all three forms, trapdoors and barricaded doorways only exist in breachable form, and floors can exist in semi-breachable and unbreachable forms.
Breachable surfaces are indicated by a green light on breach charges. These surfaces are often simple wooden surfaces with wooden supports inside them. Holes can be created on these surfaces via bullets and melee attacks, and they can be completely breached with Breach Charges and other explosives or gadgets such as a sledgehammer, creating a opening which players can move through. In addition, shotgun blasts at close range can destroy the wooden supports inside some walls surfaces, theoretically allowing a clear opening to be created if enough damage is dealt. Some breachable surfaces do not have any supports inside them, allowing players to destroy and navigate through them with all types of gunfire, instead of just shotgun blasts.
GENETIC MUTATIONS
The Gamma Prime are the true survivors, having mutated through the tampered Gamma Strain vaccine. Their enhanced abilities make them a force to be reckoned with. Each Gamma Prime has their own special abilities that make them truly unique and require a completely different play style.
